What cap fitting do most chandelier bulbs use?

Most chandeliers use the E14 small Edison screw cap, though some traditional UK fittings use the B15 small bayonet cap instead.

The E14 small Edison screw is the dominant cap type across contemporary and period-style chandeliers sold in the UK market. It measures 14mm across the threaded base and accepts the slim candle-profile bulb that suits multi-arm designs. A smaller number of fittings — particularly older British-made or heritage-style models — use the B15 small bayonet cap, which pushes and twists to lock rather than screwing in.

Before ordering replacement bulbs, check the existing lamp holder for the cap code. It is stamped on the ceramic or plastic socket, or printed on the old bulb itself. Mixing cap types is not possible without an adaptor, and adaptors are not recommended in candelabra arms where the lampholder is recessed.

LED equivalents achieve the same output at 3–5W, which matters significantly when a chandelier carries 5, 8, or 12 arms — the total wattage drops from 480W to under 60W on a 12-arm fitting.

For ambient dining or living room use, 250–300 lumens per bulb is sufficient when the chandelier is the decorative centrepiece rather than the sole task light. For a hallway or stairwell where the chandelier provides primary illumination, choose the higher end of the range — 400–470 lumens per bulb — and ensure the total lumen output across all arms meets the room's requirements.

What colour temperature works best in a chandelier?

2700K is the correct colour temperature for most chandeliers — it replicates warm incandescent light and flatters both the metalwork and the room.

Colour temperature is measured in Kelvin. Incandescent candle bulbs burn at approximately 2700K, producing a warm amber-white light. LED candle bulbs are available from 2700K through to 4000K, but anything above 3000K reads as noticeably cool and clinical in a chandelier context — it undermines the decorative intention of the fitting entirely.

For brass, gold, or antique-bronze chandeliers, 2700K is the specification. The warm light bounces off the metalwork and reinforces the amber tones in the finish. For chrome or brushed nickel fittings, 2700K still works well, though 3000K is acceptable if the room has a contemporary scheme where a slightly crisper white is preferred.

Avoid CRI (colour rendering index) values below 80. A CRI of 80–90 is standard for quality LED candle bulbs; CRI 90+ is preferable in dining rooms where food and skin tones matter. The CRI figure is printed on the bulb packaging. Can you use decorative filament bulbs in a chandelier?

Decorative filament LED candle bulbs — those with a visible looped or straight filament element inside a clear glass envelope — are a legitimate choice for chandeliers where the bulb itself is part of the aesthetic. They emit a warm 2200–2700K glow and are available in E14 and B15 cap types to match standard chandelier lampholders.

The trade-off is lumen output. Filament LED candle bulbs typically produce 150–250 lumens at 2–4W, which is lower than equivalent frosted LED candles at the same wattage. In a chandelier used purely as ambient or accent lighting, this is acceptable. In a space where the chandelier must deliver meaningful general illumination, the lower output across multiple arms may leave the room underlit.

Flicker performance on dimmers varies more with filament LEDs than with standard LED candle bulbs — test a single bulb on the dimmer before committing to a full set. Bulbs with a frosted or opal finish produce a softer, more even glow from each arm and are less prone to hot-spot glare in fittings where the bulb is partially visible. Both types are widely available and fully compatible with modern E14 chandelier lampholders.
