How do you choose a chandelier for a landing?

Choose a landing chandelier by matching its drop to your ceiling height, its width to the stairwell, and its IP rating to any damp zones.

What size chandelier suits a landing or stairwell?

For a stairwell, the chandelier's width should be 25–33% of the stairwell's narrowest dimension, and its drop must clear head height by 2.1 metres.

Sizing is the first and most critical decision. Measure the stairwell at its narrowest point — typically the width between the banister and the opposite wall. A chandelier's diameter should fall between 25% and 33% of that measurement. For a 2.4-metre-wide stairwell, that means a fitting between 60cm and 80cm wide.

Drop length is more complex on a landing because the fixture hangs over a void. The bottom of the chandelier must remain at least 2.1 metres above the highest-traffic floor level — usually the ground floor or the half-landing, whichever pedestrians pass closest to. In double-height spaces with a 5-metre ceiling, a drop of 2.5–3 metres is common and visually proportionate.

Many specifiers working with chandeliers in stairwells use the rule of 2.5cm of drop per 30cm of ceiling height as a starting guide, then adjust for the void below. Always confirm the structural fixing point can bear the fitting's weight — a 15-light brass chandelier can exceed 20kg, and standard plasterboard fixings are not sufficient. Use a joist or dedicated steel plate set into the ceiling structure.

How do you calculate the correct drop for a stairwell chandelier?

Measure from the ceiling fixing point to the lowest-traffic floor in the void, subtract 2.1 metres for head clearance, and the remainder is your maximum drop.

Start at the ceiling rose and measure vertically down to the floor at the base of the stairwell — not the landing floor. This is your total available height. Subtract 2.1 metres (the minimum head clearance required under BS 7671 guidance for occupied spaces). The figure you are left with is the maximum permissible drop from ceiling to the bottom of the chandelier body.

For example: a ceiling height of 5.4 metres above the ground floor gives a maximum drop of 3.3 metres. If the chandelier body itself is 60cm tall, the suspension chain or rod can be up to 2.7 metres.

Adjustable-length suspension systems — either chain links or a threaded rod with a ceiling canopy — let you fine-tune on site. Order at least 30cm more chain than your calculation suggests; it is straightforward to remove links but impossible to add them if the fitting arrives short.

For installations where the chandelier will be difficult to reach for relamping, specify LED light sources rated for 25,000 hours or more. This reduces the frequency of access via a ladder over the stairwell void, which is a significant working-at-height risk. Does a landing chandelier need a specific IP rating?

Most landings are dry zones and require no minimum IP rating, but if the landing is adjacent to a bathroom or skylight, IP44 is the correct minimum specification.

IP ratings define a fitting's resistance to dust and moisture ingress. A standard enclosed landing — no skylight, no adjacent wet room — is a dry zone. Any IP-rated fitting is acceptable, including IP20, which covers the majority of decorative chandeliers.

Where a landing sits directly beneath a roof light or Velux window, condensation and occasional water ingress are realistic risks. Specify IP44 minimum in these locations. IP44 protects against water splashing from any direction and is the threshold used in bathroom zone 2 specifications under BS 7671.

Landings adjacent to an en-suite or family bathroom with a shared wall require a zone assessment. If any part of the landing falls within 0.6 metres of a bathroom door opening, treat it conservatively and use IP44. The additional cost over a standard decorative fitting is modest, and the alternative — a failed fitting or a tripped circuit — is not.

For period properties with uninsulated loft spaces above, cold-bridge condensation on the ceiling can drip onto fittings. In these cases, IP44 is a practical precaution regardless of zone classification. What style of chandelier works best in a hallway or landing?

Linear or tiered chandeliers with a vertical emphasis suit stairwells; wide-spreading designs work on flat landings where ceiling height is generous and even.

Style choice follows the geometry of the space. Stairwells are tall and narrow — a fitting with a pronounced vertical element, such as a multi-tier drum or a cascading crystal column, reads well from below and from the upper landing simultaneously. Wide, low-profile designs that spread horizontally look compressed in a stairwell void and lose their visual impact when viewed from below at a steep angle.

Flat landings with a standard 2.4–2.7 metre ceiling suit a broader fitting. A 70–90cm diameter chandelier with a shallow drop of 30–50cm fills the ceiling plane without encroaching on head height.

Finish selection should reference the metalwork already present on the floor: door hardware, banisters, and radiator valves. Brushed nickel reads cleanly in contemporary builds; aged brass or antique bronze suits period properties. Mixing warm-toned metal fittings with a 2700K–3000K lamp colour temperature produces a coherent, welcoming result.

Lamp count matters for output. A landing chandelier is typically the sole light source on that circuit. For a stairwell of 12–15 square metres, target a minimum of 400 lumens per square metre — a 15-light fitting with 40-lumen LED candelabra lamps delivers approximately 600 lumens per square metre, which is adequate for safe stair navigation.

How is a landing chandelier wired and controlled?

The electrical installation for a landing chandelier is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations in England and Wales. It must be carried out by a competent person registered with a scheme operator, or notified to the local authority building control department.

Control is the key specification point. A landing light must be switchable from every floor it serves — ground floor, first floor, and any intermediate landing. This requires two-way (or three-way, for three floors) switching. The wiring configuration uses a standard two-way switch arrangement with a strapping wire between the switches.

For larger chandeliers with multiple lamp circuits, a dimmer switch is worth specifying. Trailing-edge dimmers are compatible with LED candelabra lamps; leading-edge (TRIAC) dimmers are not. Confirm lamp-to-dimmer compatibility before purchasing — most quality LED candelabra lamps now list compatible dimmer models in their technical data sheets.

The ceiling fixing must be rated for the chandelier's weight. A standard 25mm plasterboard fixing handles 5kg maximum. For fittings above 5kg — which includes most multi-light chandeliers — the installer must locate a joist, install a noggin, or use a dedicated ceiling plate anchored to the structural deck. Confirm the maximum weight rating with the fitting's technical sheet before ordering.
