What do IP44 and IP65 actually mean?

The IP code's first digit rates solid particle protection and the second rates moisture, so IP44 blocks objects over 1mm and resists splashes.

IP stands for Ingress Protection, and the two digits after it carry precise meanings under BS EN 60529. The first digit covers solids: IP4 means the enclosure stops objects and wires thicker than 1mm, while IP6 means no dust ingress at all. The second digit covers water: IP4 resists splashes from any direction, and IP5 withstands low-pressure jets from a 6.3mm nozzle. So an IP44 fitting is splash-proof but not dust-proof, and an IP65 fitting is both dust-tight and jet-proof. That distinction matters more outdoors than indoors, because wind-driven rain finds gaps that a sheltered fitting never encounters. A porch that faces prevailing south-westerly rain in most of the UK gets wetter than its roofline suggests, because gusts push water upward and sideways onto the fitting. Gaskets age, cable glands loosen over years of thermal cycling, and a fitting that was adequately sealed at installation can admit moisture a decade later. Specifying IP65 in borderline positions removes that failure mode entirely. It also matters for installation practice: an IP65 ceiling fitting will fail if water pools on top of it and finds a cable entry that has not been sealed correctly, because the rating assumes the fitting is mounted as designed. Always fit the blanking plugs supplied over unused cable entries, orient drain holes downward where the manufacturer provides them, and never mount a fitting upside down unless its instructions permit it. How should you install outdoor lighting safely?

Every outdoor lighting circuit in the UK must be protected by an RCD, typically at the consumer unit, because exterior cable runs are prone to accidental damage.
