Second, use an outdoor-rated photocell or timer in a weatherproof enclosure rated IP54 or better, wired by a qualified electrician in line with BS 7671. Do timers work with LED outdoor ceiling lights?
Modern LED outdoor ceiling lights work with all timer types, though mechanical timers can leak a small standby current that makes LEDs glow faintly.
LED fittings are compatible with every timer type, but two quirks are worth knowing. Mechanical timers use a small neutral-to-live leakage path through the clock motor, which can cause low-wattage LED fittings to glow faintly or flicker when they should be off. If you see this, swap the mechanical timer for a digital model or a smart relay with a proper off state. Second, check the minimum load rating: some older digital timers specify a minimum of 20–40 W, and a single 8 W LED bulkhead may fall below it, causing erratic switching. Modern electronic timers handle loads down to 0.5 W, so this is rarely a problem with current hardware.
