What IP rating do outdoor pendant lights need?

Outdoor pendant lights need IP44 as a minimum in covered exterior locations, and IP65 where they face direct rain, jets of water, or washdown.

What does an IP rating actually mean for an outdoor pendant light?

An IP rating is a two-digit code: the first digit rates protection against solids and dust, the second rates protection against water ingress.

An IP (Ingress Protection) rating is defined under IEC 60529 and tells you exactly what a fitting can withstand. The first digit covers solids: 4 means protection against objects and wires over 1mm, 5 means dust-protected, 6 means dust-tight. The second digit covers moisture: 4 means protection from water splashed from any direction, 5 means protection from a 6.3mm nozzle jet, 6 means protection from powerful jets, and 8 means the fitting survives continuous immersion. For exterior fittings, the second digit is the one that matters most, because water ingress is what kills outdoor pendants — corroded terminals, tripped RCDs, and eventually a failed driver or lampholder. Any fitting marketed as outdoor pendant lights will state its IP rating on the spec sheet, and you should treat that figure as a hard limit rather than a guideline. The Lighting Industry Association publishes detailed technical guidance on ingress protection and exterior product selection, which is a useful reference when a manufacturer's claims need checking. Never fit an interior-rated pendant outside, even under cover, unless the manufacturer explicitly states it is suitable.

When is IP44 enough for an outdoor pendant?

IP44 is sufficient for outdoor pendant lights in covered locations such as porches and canopies, where rain cannot strike the fitting directly.

IP44 is the accepted minimum for outdoor pendants mounted in covered locations — a recessed porch, a covered entrance canopy, a pergola with a solid roof, or a carport. The test behind the second digit (splashing water from any direction) matches real conditions in these spaces: wind-driven spray and condensation will reach the fitting, but falling rain will not strike it directly. Most quality exterior pendants, including the Nordfor and Terba ranges stocked at Lamp Genius, are rated IP44 for exactly this reason — the manufacturer assumes a covered mounting position and designs the seal accordingly. Two practical caveats apply. First, the cover must be genuine: an open eave with a 45-degree exposure to driving rain is not a covered location, and wind will push water upwards into the fitting. Second, coastal and exposed hillside sites justify stepping up to IP65 even under cover, because salt-laden air and horizontal spray defeat IP44 seals faster than most manufacturers assume. Match the rating to the actual microclimate, not the brochure photograph.

When do you need IP65 for an outdoor pendant?

Choose IP65 for any outdoor pendant exposed to driving rain, wind-blown spray, or water jets, as IP44 cannot withstand sustained direct wetting.

Specify IP65 whenever the pendant hangs in an open, uncovered position: an open-sided pergola, a covered but fully exposed balcony edge, a gazebo without solid sides, or anywhere the fitting is directly exposed to falling rain. The second digit 5 means the enclosure withstands a low-pressure jet from a 6.3mm nozzle from any direction, which is a far more demanding test than the splash protection behind IP44. In practice, this matters most on exposed sites — open countryside, coastal frontage, upper floors with no shelter above — where wind drives rain horizontally and upwards into fittings. IP65 enclosures achieve this with compression-sealed gaskets, cable glands, and often a one-piece diffuser, so check that the pendant's suspension point is also sealed; a rated body with an open cord entry is a common failure point. IP66 or IP67 ratings add margin for washdown or temporary flooding but are rarely necessary for domestic pendants. The trade-off is design choice: fewer decorative fittings reach IP65, so expect more utilitarian silhouettes and accept that the seal integrity is worth the aesthetic compromise.

How should you install an outdoor pendant safely?

Outdoor pendant circuits must be RCD-protected, connections sealed with IP-rated glands, and any work within zones must follow BS 7671 wiring rules.

The IP rating protects the fitting; correct installation protects everything around it. Exterior pendant circuits must be protected by a 30mA RCD at the consumer unit, and all connections should be made in IP-rated junction boxes or within the fitting's own terminal compartment — never in a twisted joint wrapped in tape. Use exterior-grade cable (steel-wire armoured or suitable outdoor flexible) and seal the cable entry with a proper gland so the enclosure rating is preserved. BS 7671 governs the whole installation, including the requirement that exterior equipment is suitable for its environmental conditions; where a pendant forms part of a new build or extension, the NHBC's homeowner guidance sets out the standards your builder should be meeting for external electrical work. If the pendant is heavy, fix the backplate to a structural mounting point or a certified fixing, not just the render or cladding. And if any part of the work involves new circuits or a consumer unit change, it is notifiable under Part P — use a registered electrician rather than self-certifying.
