Can you hang a pendant light outside?

Yes — you can hang a pendant light outside, provided it carries an IP44 rating or higher and the circuit is protected by an RCD.

What does an outdoor pendant need to survive the weather?

An outdoor pendant needs at least IP44 protection against splashed water and sealed cable entries so rain cannot track into the fitting.

An indoor pendant offers no defence against moisture, and rain reaching a live lampholder creates both a shock risk and rapid terminal corrosion. Any fitting mounted outside must carry an ingress protection rating appropriate to its position. The first digit covers solids and the second covers water, so IP44 means protection against objects over 1 mm and against splashing water from any direction. IP65 adds resistance to water jets, which matters for fully exposed positions.

Cable entry matters as much as the rating itself: the cord grip and gland must be sealed so water cannot track down the cable into the backplate. Check the temperature rating too — exterior fittings should tolerate minus 15 °C at minimum, since indoor-grade plastics turn brittle in frost and crack around the lampholder within a couple of winters.

Where can you hang a pendant light outside?

Hang outdoor pendants in covered locations such as porches, porticos and canopies, where the fitting stays sheltered from driving rain.

Covered positions are the correct answer: a porch, a portico, a covered veranda, under a solid-roofed canopy or pergola, and either side of a front door. In all of these the fitting stays out of driving rain, which is what an IP44 rating assumes. Avoid open eaves and exposed gable ends — a pendant under an open eave will take wind-driven rain from below and sideways, and the seal will fail within a few seasons. If the only available position is exposed, choose a dedicated IP65 lantern instead of a pendant.

Building Regulations matter where the fixing penetrates a ceiling. In extensions and new builds, any penetration through a ceiling forming part of an intermediate floor must preserve the floor's fire and acoustic performance. The NHBC's technical guidance on recessed lighting in ceilings to intermediate floors sets out how installers should maintain that integrity, and the same principle applies to ceiling penetrations under an external roof overhang. Mounting height matters as well: hang the pendant so its lowest point sits at least 2.1 metres above ground level where people walk beneath, which prevents head contact and keeps the fitting clear of splash-back from wet paving.

How do you install an outdoor pendant safely?

Outdoor pendant installation requires an RCD-protected circuit, weatherproof connections and, for most UK homes, a qualified electrician under Part P.

Start with the circuit. Any outdoor lighting circuit must be RCD-protected, and the pendant should be fed from either a fused spur off an existing circuit or its own way in the consumer unit. Isolate at the consumer unit and confirm dead with a two-pole tester before touching anything. Connections must be made inside the fitting's terminal compartment using weatherproof glands, not twisted block connectors wrapped in tape. Where the cable run passes through an external wall, use a sealed duct or sleeve sloped outwards so water cannot pool against the entry point.

Work in the external zones of a dwelling falls under Part P of the Building Regulations, which means the work must either be notified to building control or carried out by a registered installer. The simplest route for most homeowners is to use a NICEIC-registered electrician, who will self-certify the installation and issue the relevant certificate. If you are swapping an existing fitting on an existing weatherproof spur, that counts as like-for-like work you can legally do yourself — but the moment a new cable run or new circuit is involved, bring in a professional.

How do you maintain an outdoor pendant light?

Clean outdoor pendants twice a year, check seals and cable glands annually, and replace any fitting showing corrosion or water ingress.

Twice a year, isolate the fitting and clean the diffuser with warm soapy water — salt, pollen and traffic film cut light output noticeably. Annually, check the cable gland, cord grip and any door seals, and look inside the diffuser for condensation, which is the first sign a seal has failed. A single drop of water on a hot lamp will crack the glass, so treat ingress as urgent rather than cosmetic. Replace any fitting showing corrosion on the backplate, brittle or discoloured cable, or persistent internal condensation; a corroded earth terminal on an exterior fitting is a genuine shock hazard.

Use LED lamps in exterior pendants — they run cooler, tolerate frost and last through the years between ladder trips. If the pendant has an open-bottom shade, fit a lamp with construction matched to the fitting's rating rather than a bare indoor bulb. Re-tighten the cord grip each year as well; thermal cycling loosens it over time, and a slipping cord eventually transfers the fitting's weight onto the electrical connections instead of the mechanical grip, which is how terminals work loose and fail.
