What exactly is a picture light?
A picture light is a wall-fixed, arm-mounted fitting that projects a controlled beam downward and forward across the face of a painting or mirror.
A picture light mounts directly to the wall above a frame and extends forward on a rigid arm so the light source clears the top of the artwork before angling down. The goal is even illumination across the canvas or glass surface without hot spots, deep shadows, or glare bouncing back at the viewer.
Traditionally, picture lights used incandescent or halogen lamps and came in brass, chrome, or antique bronze to complement ornate frames. Modern versions use integrated LED strips or small GU10-style modules, cutting energy use dramatically while maintaining the warm 2700K–3000K colour temperature that renders oil paint and photography accurately.

How do you position a picture light correctly?
Mount the picture light so its arm projects the beam at roughly 30 degrees to the canvas face, with the fitting centred horizontally above the frame.
Correct positioning prevents the two most common failures: a bright stripe across the top third of the artwork, and a shadow band across the bottom.
The standard rule is to mount the fitting 75–100mm above the top of the frame. The arm length then determines how far the light source sits in front of the wall. A longer arm (150mm or more) suits deeper frames and canvases; a shorter arm works on flat prints under glass. The beam should strike the canvas at approximately 30 degrees from vertical — steep enough to wash down evenly, shallow enough to avoid grazing the texture and creating unwanted shadow relief on impasto brushwork.
Horizontal centring is non-negotiable. Measure the frame width and mark the midpoint on the wall above it. The fitting's backplate centres on that mark.
For paintings wider than 900mm, a single picture light rarely achieves even coverage. Use two fittings, each positioned at one-third of the width in from each edge, both mounted at the same height. Wire them to the same switch circuit so they operate together.
For mirrors, the same geometry applies, but choose a fitting with a frosted or shielded lamp — a bare bulb reflecting in a mirror creates direct glare at eye level, which defeats the purpose entirely.
What wiring does a picture light require?
Hard-wired picture lights connect to a standard 230V spur; plug-in versions need only a nearby socket, making them suitable for rental properties.
Hard-wired picture lights are wired as a fused spur from the ring main, typically rated at 3A for LED fittings. The cable runs inside the wall from the consumer unit circuit, emerging at the backplate position. For a single picture light, the load is minimal — most LED picture lights draw under 10W. The practical concern is not load capacity but cable routing. Plug-in picture lights sidestep all of this. They terminate in a standard 13A plug and draw power from any nearby socket. The cable runs along the wall surface, either exposed or clipped into a matching trunking strip. The trade-off is a visible cable and a plug occupying a socket permanently.
Switch placement matters regardless of wiring type. A wall switch at the room entrance is the professional standard. Avoid relying on pull-cords or lamp-body switches for artwork lighting — they require approaching the fitting each time.
How do you choose the right picture light for your artwork?
Match arm length to frame depth, choose 2700K–3000K colour temperature, and select a finish that complements the frame rather than competing with it.
Three technical parameters govern the choice: arm length, colour temperature, and lumen output.
Arm length must clear the frame's depth plus 20–30mm so the light source sits in front of the canvas plane. A flat print under 5mm of glass needs a 100mm arm; a heavily framed oil painting with a 40mm moulding needs 150mm or more.
Colour temperature should be 2700K for warm-toned paintings (oils, watercolours with earth pigments) and 3000K for photography, prints, and cooler-palette works. Avoid anything above 3000K — it shifts warm pigments towards grey and makes skin tones in portraits look clinical.
Lumen output depends on artwork size. A rough benchmark is 200–300 lux at the canvas surface for domestic display. For a 600mm × 900mm painting, a fitting producing 300–400 lumens at the arm tip is typically sufficient. Larger works need more output or multiple fittings.
Finish should read as a deliberate choice alongside the frame. Brass fittings suit gilt and dark wood frames. Chrome works with contemporary aluminium or lacquered frames. Antique bronze complements aged timber. The fitting is visible — it sits above the artwork in the sightline — so a finish clash reads as an oversight.
