What is the standard height for wall lights in a living room or hallway?

In living rooms and hallways, wall lights mount at 1.5–1.7 metres from the finished floor level for balanced ambient light distribution.

The 1.5–1.7 metre range is the professional standard for general-purpose wall lights in rooms with standard 2.4 metre ceilings. At this height, the fitting sits roughly at eye level when standing, which prevents direct glare into seated occupants' line of sight while still casting light upward and downward across the wall plane.

In hallways, 1.6 metres is a reliable default. It clears most door frames visually and keeps the light source above head height for taller adults. Drop below 1.5 metres and you risk glare at eye level when walking through; go above 1.8 metres and the fitting starts to feel disconnected from the human scale of the space.

For rooms with higher ceilings — 2.7 metres or above — scale the mounting height up proportionally. A fitting at 1.7 metres in a 3-metre room will look low and squat. Aim for roughly 60–65% of ceiling height as a starting point, then adjust based on the fitting's own height and the direction of its light output.

How do you set wall light height on staircases?

On staircases, wall lights space at every 1.2–1.5 metres of vertical rise, mounted 1.8–2 metres above each tread they serve for safe illumination.

Staircases require a different approach because the floor level changes continuously. The reference point shifts from a fixed floor height to the tread immediately below each fitting.

Mount each fitting 1.8–2 metres above the tread it illuminates. On a standard UK staircase with 200mm risers and 900mm between fittings vertically, this means staggering fittings on alternating walls or at consistent intervals up a single wall, with each fitting's backplate rising by one riser height relative to the previous one.

The critical safety requirement is eliminating dark patches between fittings. A single fitting at the top or bottom of a flight is inadequate for a staircase longer than 8 treads — the falloff is too steep. Space fittings so their illuminated zones overlap by at least 300mm.

Also consider the fitting's own vertical dimension.
