What circuit should an outdoor ceiling light connect to?

The circuit must be RCD-protected and the fitting rated IP44 or higher, with all connections made inside an IP-rated junction box or the fitting itself.

An outdoor ceiling light should connect to an existing lighting circuit protected by a 30mA RCD, which every modern consumer unit provides. The fitting itself must carry a minimum IP44 rating for a covered porch or IP65 for full weather exposure. All cable joints belong inside the fitting's terminal block or inside a separate IP-rated junction box — never in a standard indoor connector block left outside. How do you wire the switch itself?

At a standard single-gang plate switch, the permanent live from the lighting circuit lands on the COM terminal and the outgoing switched live lands on L1. If you are wiring a new switch specifically for the outdoor light, first bring a permanent live and neutral feed into the switch backbox, then take a three-core flex out: switched live, neutral and earth. The neutral runs straight through the switch position to the fitting, because a simple plate switch only breaks the live conductor.
