Why do LED outdoor ceiling lights last longer than halogen?

LED outdoor ceiling lights last around 25,000 hours, roughly 25 times the 1,000-hour lifespan of a typical halogen lamp in the same fitting.

LED sources last around 25,000 hours against roughly 1,000 hours for a halogen lamp, so a fitting used three hours a night runs for over two decades before the source needs replacing. A halogen in the same position needs a new lamp every year or so, which means repeated trips up a ladder or step ladder for a flush fitting under a porch or canopy. That maintenance burden matters more outdoors than in, because outdoor fittings are frequently mounted at height or in awkward positions above doorways and terraces.

The market has already settled this question: nearly all current outdoor ceiling lights are designed around integrated LED modules or standard LED lamps, with halogen versions largely discontinued by manufacturers. Fewer lamp changes also mean fewer chances to compromise the fitting's seals — every time you open an IP44 enclosure to swap a lamp, you risk disturbing the gasket that keeps moisture out.

Outdoors, the case is stronger still because lights are left on unattended overnight, where nobody is present to notice or switch them off. With eight or ten fittings under canopies and in porches on a larger property, halogen is simply an expensive habit.

Do LED outdoor ceiling lights cope better with damp and enclosed fittings?

LEDs run cool and suit enclosed, IP44-rated fittings; halogen lamps run hot, shortening their own life and stressing seals and gaskets.

Halogen lamps convert roughly 90% of their energy into heat, and in an enclosed or semi-enclosed ceiling fitting that heat has nowhere to go. It degrades the lamp's own electronics and filament life, yellows diffusers, and repeatedly heats and cools the gaskets and seals that give the fitting its IP44 or IP65 rating. Thermal cycling is one of the main reasons outdoor fittings fail at the seal rather than at the wiring.

LEDs run far cooler at the fitting body, which is why IP44 LED flush fittings like the Nordfor range can be sealed for life with no user-serviceable parts. The trade-off is that LED drivers do not like sustained temperatures above about 65°C either, so an enclosed halogen-spec fitting retrofitted with an LED lamp can still run too hot — which is why choosing a fitting designed for LED from the outset, rather than converting one, gives the best service life. Cool-running also means less risk of scorching to timber porch ceilings and canopy linings.

Which should you choose for brightness and light quality?

LEDs now match halogen for warmth at 2700K–3000K with 80+ CRI, and their instant full brightness outperforms halogen in cold weather.

Early LED's cold blue colour was a fair criticism; current lamps deliver 2700K–3000K warm white with a colour rendering index of 80 or better, indistinguishable from halogen in a porch or under a canopy. Choose 3000K for entrance and terrace lighting where you want a clean, welcoming output, or 2700K if the fitting is visible from living spaces through glazing.

LEDs also reach full brightness instantly and are unaffected by cold, whereas halogen output is stable but wasteful. For circulation areas, the Energy Saving Trust's guidance on energy-efficient lighting in halls recommends around 300 lux at floor level — achievable outdoors with a single 800-lumen LED in a diffused flush fitting, where you would previously have needed a 60W halogen. Check lumen output rather than wattage equivalents on any product listing: an 800lm LED replaces a 60W halogen, and anything above 1,000lm suits larger covered terraces.
