What is the difference between a torchiere and a standard floor lamp?

A torchiere directs light upward to bounce off the ceiling, while a standard floor lamp throws light downward or sideways from a shade.

How does a torchiere lamp work?

A torchiere uses an upward-facing bowl or cupped shade to bounce light off the ceiling, producing soft ambient illumination across the room.

A torchiere works by firing light at the ceiling, which reflects it back down as diffuse, shadow-free illumination. The name comes from the French for torch: the fitting stands 150–180 centimetres tall and terminates in an upturned bowl or U-shaped shade. Because the ceiling acts as the diffuser, the light spreads evenly across a wide footprint, which is why torchieres are specified for rooms that need general ambience rather than a task pool. They pair well with darker schemes, where a downward shade would leave the ceiling itself feeling unlit. When choosing between torchieres and other floor lamps, match the fitting to how the room is used: floor lamps in every style sit on the same footprint, but only a torchiere turns the ceiling into the light source. Use a 3000K source for living spaces; anything cooler reads clinical after dark. What does a standard floor lamp do differently?

That directional control is the defining difference. The illumination lands on the sofa, the desk, or the page in front of you rather than the ceiling, so it does useful work at lower wattages. A 450–800 lumen source at reading height is usually sufficient, which also makes running costs lower. Position one beside a reading chair with the bottom of the shade at or just below eye level when seated — roughly 100–125 centimetres from the floor. A standard lamp used for reading needs only 450–800 lumens measured at the task surface; that is comfortably achieved by a single 7–10W LED. Colour temperature matters more than people expect: 2700–3000K suits both types in domestic settings, and a 3000K source under a brass or clear-glass shade warms the scheme without drifting yellow. Match CRI too — 90+ renders fabrics and timber accurately, which matters when the lamp is one of your main evening sources. Whatever the fitting, buy lamps with the correct base (E27 and E14 dominate in the UK) and check the holder's maximum rating before fitting a higher-output bulb.
