What exactly is a chandelier?
A chandelier is a suspended, multi-arm decorative luminaire, typically featuring multiple lamp positions and ornamental elements such as crystal or metalwork.
A chandelier is a complete light fitting designed to hang from the ceiling and distribute light across multiple arms or tiers. The defining characteristics are structural: multiple lamp positions (typically 3 to 24), a central body or frame, and decorative elements — crystal drops, glass shades, or sculpted metalwork — that make the fitting as much an aesthetic statement as a functional one.
The term covers a wide range of styles, from traditional tiered crystal designs to contemporary geometric frames. What unites them is the intention: a chandelier is specified as the primary decorative focal point of a room, not merely a source of illumination.

What is a ceiling rose and what does it actually do?
A ceiling rose is a circular cover plate fixed to the ceiling that conceals the electrical junction where a pendant or chandelier's flex connects to the mains supply.
A ceiling rose performs two functions: it provides a mechanical fixing point for the pendant's weight and it conceals the electrical connection between the flex and the circuit wiring behind the plaster. In UK domestic installations, the ceiling rose is wired to the lighting circuit at the consumer unit and must comply with BS 7671 — the IET Wiring Regulations.
The rose itself is not a light fitting. It contains no lamp, no diffuser, and no decorative element beyond its own profile. Standard UK ceiling roses are white plastic, 75–100mm in diameter, and rated for pendant loads up to around 3kg without additional support. For heavier fittings — including most chandeliers — a separate backplate, hook, and strain relief arrangement is required rather than a standard rose.
Ceiling roses are available in decorative plaster or resin versions for period interiors, but these are purely cosmetic additions around the electrical rose, not replacements for it.
The confusion between the two terms arises partly because older UK homes often have an ornamental plaster ceiling rose — a large decorative moulding centred on the ceiling — which is entirely separate from the electrical ceiling rose beneath it. The plaster rose is architectural; the electrical rose is functional. Both may be present simultaneously, with the chandelier's canopy or backplate covering the electrical rose while the plaster rose frames the fitting visually.
How does a chandelier connect to the ceiling rose?
A chandelier connects via a chain or rod suspension system that attaches to a ceiling hook or backplate, with the flex running through to the electrical rose above.
Most chandeliers do not connect directly to a standard ceiling rose. The fitting's weight — often 5–15kg for a substantial crystal chandelier — exceeds the load rating of a plastic rose. The correct installation sequence uses a metal backplate or canopy fixed to a structural joist or a proprietary ceiling anchor, with a hook rated for the fitting's mass.
The electrical connection is made inside the canopy: the chandelier's flex or cable terminates at a connector block, which is then wired to the circuit conductors. The canopy covers this junction, performing the same concealment role as a ceiling rose on a lighter pendant.
For installations where an existing ceiling rose is already in place, the electrician will typically remove it and fit a backplate rated for the chandelier's weight. Attempting to hang a heavy chandelier from the original plastic rose is a structural failure risk.
Energy consumption is a practical consideration at the point of installation. A 12-lamp chandelier fitted with halogen lamps draws significantly more power than the same fitting with LED equivalents. Switching to LED across the home's pendant and chandelier fittings is one of the most cost-effective energy-saving measures available, as noted by the Energy Saving Trust in their guidance on home improvement projects. Specify LED-compatible dimmers at the same time to avoid flicker.
Does the size of the room affect which chandelier you should choose?
Room dimensions determine chandelier diameter, drop height, and lamp count — undersizing a fitting in a large room is as problematic as oversizing in a small one.
The standard sizing rule for chandelier diameter: add the room's length and width in metres, then convert to centimetres. A 4m × 5m room calls for a fitting approximately 90cm wide. This is a starting point, not a ceiling — dining rooms with high ceilings and formal function can take larger fittings.
Drop height is the more critical dimension in rooms with lower ceilings. The bottom of the chandelier should clear a standing adult's head by at least 200mm when positioned over a table, and by 2.1 metres minimum in any walkthrough space. For open-plan rooms with 2.4m ceilings, a flush or semi-flush chandelier is the correct specification; a full-drop fitting will feel oppressive and present a head-height hazard.
