What exactly is a drum chandelier?

A drum chandelier is a multi-lamp fitting enclosed in a cylindrical shade — fabric, metal, or glass — suspended from a ceiling rose or canopy.

A drum chandelier takes its name from the shape of its shade: a straight-sided cylinder, open at the top and bottom, that houses two or more light sources on an internal frame. The shade diffuses glare while the multiple lamps produce enough output for general room illumination — something a single pendant cannot match at the same diameter.

The construction varies by specification. Entry-level versions use a fabric drum over a steel ring frame with E27 lamp holders arranged around the perimeter. Mid-range and premium fittings swap fabric for opal glass panels, metal mesh, or open metalwork rings, which changes both the light distribution and the aesthetic considerably.

Among the broader family of chandeliers, the drum format is the most architecturally neutral. For dining tables specifically, the drum diameter should be 30–40cm narrower than the table width. A 120cm-wide table takes a 80–90cm drum; a 90cm-wide table takes a 50–60cm drum. Exceeding the table width creates a visual imbalance and risks head clearance issues when people stand.

Ceiling height governs drop length. The bottom of the shade should sit no lower than 2.1m above finished floor level in a circulation route and 75–80cm above a dining table surface.
