What IP rating do you need for bathroom wall lights?

Bathroom wall lights require a minimum IP44 rating in zone 2, and IP65 or higher within zone 1 or directly above a bath or shower.

What do the bathroom zone classifications actually mean?

BS 7671 divides the bathroom into zones 0, 1, and 2, each requiring a progressively lower IP rating as distance from water increases.

BS 7671 — the UK wiring regulations — defines three zones inside a bathroom based on proximity to water sources. Zone 0 is inside the bath or shower tray itself. Zone 1 extends vertically above the bath or shower to a height of 2.25 metres. Zone 2 covers the area within 0.6 metres horizontally of the bath, shower, or basin, up to 2.25 metres high.

For practical wall light installation, most positions beside a mirror or above a vanity unit fall within zone 2. Fittings positioned directly above or beside a shower enclosure, within that 0.6-metre horizontal band, fall into zone 1.

The IP rating system uses two digits: the first indicates protection against solid particles, the second against water ingress. IP44 means protected against solid objects over 1mm and against water splashing from any direction — adequate for zone 2. IP65 means fully dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets, which is the minimum for zone 1.

Many homeowners browsing wall lights underestimate how far zone 2 extends — the 0.6-metre boundary is measured from the edge of the basin or shower tray, not from the tap or showerhead. Measure before specifying any fitting.

Which IP rating do you need in each bathroom zone?

Zone 0 requires IP67 minimum, zone 1 requires IP45 minimum, and zone 2 requires IP44 minimum — these are the BS 7671 mandatory thresholds.

The minimum IP ratings by zone are fixed under BS 7671 and are not negotiable:

  • Zone 0: IP67 minimum (submersion-rated; only SELV 12V luminaires permitted)
  • Zone 1: IP45 minimum (IP65 is the practical standard most manufacturers supply)
  • Zone 2: IP44 minimum (the most common rating for bathroom wall lights)
  • Outside all zones: no IP requirement, though IP20 or higher is sensible in a humid environment

For zone 2, IP44 is the floor, not the target. Many fittings rated IP44 are designed specifically for bathroom use and carry CE or UKCA marking confirming compliance. Choosing an IP54 or IP65 fitting in zone 2 exceeds the requirement and adds a margin of safety in rooms with poor ventilation or high condensation.

Never install a fitting rated below IP44 in any zone — an IP20 or IP23 fitting has no water protection and presents a genuine shock risk in a humid environment. According to electrical safety guidance for DIY and electrics, bathroom electrical work is one of the most common sources of dangerous DIY errors in UK homes. If in doubt, use a higher-rated fitting — over-specifying on IP rating carries no downside.

Does the IP rating apply to the whole fitting or just the lampshade?

The IP rating applies to the complete luminaire as tested — backplate, body, and diffuser together — not to individual components in isolation.

A fitting's IP rating is assigned to the assembled unit as tested by the manufacturer. Replacing the diffuser, adding a different shade, or modifying the backplate voids that rating. The protection is a function of the seals, gaskets, and housing geometry working together.

This matters when specifying decorative wall lights for bathrooms. A fitting with a fabric shade or an open-backed backplate is almost certainly rated IP20 — suitable for a dry bedroom, not a bathroom. Frosted glass or polycarbonate diffusers sealed with silicone gaskets are the typical construction for IP44-rated bathroom fittings.

The backplate deserves specific attention. Many wall lights use a standard ceiling rose-style backplate with no sealing. In zone 2, the backplate must also meet IP44. Some manufacturers rate the body at IP44 but supply an unrated backplate — check the product datasheet, not just the headline specification.

For installations where the fitting will be surface-mounted directly onto a tiled wall, confirm the backplate is rated and that the cable entry point is sealed. A conduit entry without a grommet or cable gland will compromise the IP rating regardless of how well the rest of the fitting is sealed.

Can you install standard wall lights in a bathroom if it's outside all zones?

Outside zones 0, 1, and 2, there is no mandatory IP requirement, but IP20 fittings in a steam-heavy bathroom will degrade faster than rated.

Technically, a wall light positioned more than 0.6 metres from any water source and above 2.25 metres from the floor is outside all defined zones and carries no mandatory IP requirement under BS 7671. A standard IP20 fitting is legally permissible in that position.

In practice, bathrooms generate sustained humidity and condensation. An IP20 fitting in a poorly ventilated bathroom will accumulate moisture inside the housing over time, corroding contacts and degrading the lampholder. This shortens the fitting's service life and can cause intermittent faults.

For bathrooms with an extractor fan and good ventilation, a non-IP-rated fitting positioned well outside all zones will generally perform acceptably. For en-suites, wet rooms, or any bathroom without mechanical ventilation, choose IP44 as a minimum across the entire room — the marginal cost difference between an IP20 and IP44 fitting is rarely significant.

Note also that outdoor and garden electrical safety principles apply a similar logic: moisture ingress is cumulative and often invisible until a fault occurs. The same principle applies indoors in high-humidity rooms. Specify for the environment, not just the minimum legal threshold.

Does bathroom wall light installation require a qualified electrician?

In England and Wales, bathroom lighting installation is notifiable work under Part P, requiring a registered electrician or building control sign-off.

Part P of the Building Regulations classifies bathroom electrical work as notifiable in England and Wales. This means either a Part P-registered electrician must carry out the installation, or the work must be notified to and inspected by your local building control authority before completion.

Scotland and Northern Ireland operate under separate regulations but impose comparable restrictions on bathroom electrical work. In all cases, a bathroom is treated as a special location under BS 7671 — the same framework that defines the IP zone requirements.

For a homeowner replacing a like-for-like fitting on an existing circuit, the legal position is less clear-cut, but the practical advice is consistent: use a registered electrician. The combination of water, steam, and mains voltage makes bathrooms the highest-risk domestic electrical environment. A Part P certificate also matters at point of sale — insurers and conveyancers will ask for it.

When briefing an electrician, specify the IP rating you need for each fitting position before purchasing. An electrician who surveys the room first can confirm zone boundaries precisely, which avoids the cost of returning fittings that don't meet the required rating for their intended position.
