What exactly is a swing arm wall light?
A swing arm wall light is a wall-mounted fitting with one or more hinged arm sections that extend, retract, and pivot to reposition the shade.
A swing arm wall light mounts to the wall via a backplate and uses a jointed arm — typically two or three sections — to carry the lamp holder and shade away from the wall surface. Bedside reading is the primary application. Mounted 140–160cm from floor level and positioned 30–40cm to the side of the pillow centreline, the arm extends over the bed and the head angles down at roughly 30–45 degrees to illuminate the page without spilling onto a sleeping partner. A shade with a narrow aperture — drum or cone — contains the beam further.
Home offices benefit where desk surface is at a premium. A swing arm fixed to the wall beside or behind the monitor provides consistent task illumination at 500 lux or above without occupying desk space or creating cable clutter across the worktop.

Plasterboard alone is insufficient — fix into masonry or into a timber noggin confirmed with a stud detector. Use M4 or M5 fixings rated to the manufacturer's specified load.
Electrical connection must comply with BS 7671 (the IET Wiring Regulations). Arm reach is the first specification. Measure the distance from the wall to where you need the light source to sit — typically 40–60cm for bedside use. A two-joint arm gives 40–50cm of reach; a three-joint arm reaches 60–80cm. Do not buy on aesthetics alone and assume the arm will reach far enough.
Joint count affects flexibility. Two joints allow forward extension and vertical tilt. Three joints add a second lateral pivot, which is useful for corner placements or where the fitting needs to swing clear of a headboard or shelving.
Lamp type determines beam quality. GU10 fittings give a fixed beam angle (typically 36–60 degrees) and suit task lighting precisely. E14 or E27 fittings with an open shade give a broader, softer output — better for ambient contribution alongside task use. Specify LED throughout: a 5W GU10 at 2700K delivers adequate reading illumination without heat build-up inside the shade.
Shade aperture controls spill. A closed-top shade with a narrow bottom aperture concentrates light downward. An open-top shade adds upward ambient wash, which softens the room atmosphere but reduces task intensity at the page. For a dedicated reading light, choose a closed-top shade.
