How do you choose wall lights for a staircase?

Choose staircase wall lights rated for the height, spaced 1.2–1.5 metres apart vertically, with IP20 minimum and a beam that clears each tread.

What mounting height and spacing should staircase wall lights use?

Mount staircase wall lights at 1.5–1.8 metres above each landing and space them 1.2–1.5 metres apart vertically along the flight.

The standard approach is to fix each fitting at 1.5–1.8 metres above the nearest tread or landing, measured vertically. On a straight flight, space fittings every 1.2–1.5 metres up the stringer wall. This interval ensures the beam from each unit overlaps the pool from the one above, eliminating dark patches between fittings.

On a dog-leg or quarter-turn stair, treat each straight section as its own run and apply the same spacing rule independently. The landing itself counts as a distinct zone — add one fitting centred on the landing wall rather than trying to extend the stair run across it.

Specifiers working across the broader category of wall lights often underestimate how much the stair geometry changes the required number of fittings. A 13-tread flight with a 2.6-metre rise typically needs three fittings on the stringer wall; a 17-tread flight needs four.

Keep the fitting's backplate flush to the wall and confirm the projecting body clears the handrail by at least 50mm. On narrow staircases — under 900mm clear width — choose a compact profile (under 120mm projection) to stay within Part K of the Building Regulations, which requires 2 metres of clear headroom above every step nosing.

What beam angle and light output do staircase wall lights need?

Staircase wall lights need a wide beam of 90–120 degrees and at least 400 lumens per fitting to illuminate treads without casting harsh shadows.

A narrow-beam fitting (under 60 degrees) concentrates light in a tight column and leaves the treads immediately above and below in shadow — a genuine trip hazard. Choose fittings with a beam angle of 90–120 degrees so the spread covers the tread surface rather than just the wall plane.

For lumen output, 400–600 lumens per fitting is the practical range for a domestic stair. Below 400 lumens, the treads appear dim against the ambient light from adjoining rooms; above 600 lumens, glare becomes a problem when descending and looking directly at the fittings.

Colour temperature matters here too. 2700K–3000K produces a warm white that reads well against timber treads and painted risers without the clinical appearance of 4000K. Colour rendering index (CRI) should be Ra 90 or above — lower CRI values flatten the tread nosing detail that the eye uses to judge step depth.

Do staircase wall lights need a particular IP rating?

Staircase wall lights in a dry, enclosed hall need IP20 minimum; if the stair is open to an external door or unheated porch, specify IP44 or above.

IP20 is the baseline for any interior fitting — it protects against solid objects larger than 12mm but offers no moisture protection. For a standard enclosed staircase in a heated home, IP20 is sufficient.

Where the stair opens directly onto an unheated porch, a garage, or an external door that is regularly left open in wet weather, condensation and draught-borne moisture can reach the fittings. In those locations, specify IP44 minimum — rated against splash from any direction.

This distinction also applies to listed or rented properties. Landlords carrying out electrical work in rented homes must comply with the Electrical Safety Standards in the Private Rented Sector (England) Regulations 2020, which require a valid Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR). The Citizens Advice guidance on landlord repair responsibilities confirms that electrical safety is a landlord obligation, not a tenant one — relevant if you are specifying staircase lighting for a rental refurbishment.

For new-build or full rewire projects, BS 7671:2018 (the IET Wiring Regulations, 18th Edition) governs all fixed wiring, including staircase circuits. The staircase is not a special location under BS 7671 unless it adjoins a bathroom zone, in which case the relevant zone rules apply to any fitting within the defined distances.

How do you control staircase wall lights effectively?

Two-way switching at top and bottom of the flight is the minimum; PIR sensors or smart dimmers eliminate the need to cross a dark stair to operate lights.

Two-way switching — one switch at the top of the flight, one at the bottom — is a requirement under Part P of the Building Regulations for any new installation. It allows the light to be turned on from either end before ascending or descending, which is the primary safety function.

For a flight with an intermediate landing, three-way (intermediate) switching adds a third switch at the landing level. This is standard practice on a staircase of more than 12 risers.

PIR (passive infrared) occupancy sensors are the most practical upgrade. A sensor mounted at the top of the flight detects motion on approach and triggers the lights before the first step is taken. Pair it with a second sensor at the bottom for automatic off when the stair is clear. Set the hold time to 90 seconds minimum — shorter intervals cause the lights to cut out mid-descent.

Smart controls (DALI, Zigbee, or Z-Wave) allow the staircase circuit to dim automatically at night — useful in households where a lit stair at 3am would disturb sleep. Set a night scene at 10–15% output: enough to navigate safely without full brightness.

Dimmable fittings require a compatible trailing-edge or leading-edge dimmer matched to the lamp type. G9 LED capsules (as used in the Kwad Grey Concrete Square Wall Light, 1 Lamp, G9, 10cm Wide) require a trailing-edge dimmer rated for the total wattage of the circuit. Check the dimmer's minimum load — many 250W dimmers fail to operate below 10W, which is a common fault on circuits with only two or three low-wattage LED fittings.
