How do you choose wall lights for a hallway?

What size wall light suits a hallway?

In a standard hallway, choose wall lights with a backplate no wider than 15cm and a projection under 20cm to avoid obstructing the passage.

Hallways are the most dimensionally constrained room in most UK homes. A fitting that reads well in a living room will overpower a 90cm-wide corridor. The backplate width and the projection — how far the fitting extends from the wall — are the two measurements that matter most.

For a ceiling height of 2.4 metres, mount the fitting at 1.5–1.7 metres from the floor. This keeps the light source at eye level without creating glare for anyone walking past. In a double-height entrance hall, you can scale up to a larger fitting and raise the mounting height to 2–2.2 metres, but the projection rule still applies: anything over 25cm becomes a hazard in a narrow space.

Specifiers working across a range of wall lights consistently find that compact drum shades, flat geometric forms, and slim lantern profiles perform best in hallways. Avoid wide empire shades or outward-angled arms — they eat into the usable width and catch shoulders.

If the hallway connects directly to an exterior door, check the fitting's IP rating. Any wall light within 2 metres of an external door that opens inward should carry at least IP44 to handle splashed water and draughts carrying moisture.

What colour temperature works best in a hallway?

Use 2700–3000K in a hallway: warm enough to feel welcoming at the door, bright enough to read coat hooks and stair edges clearly.

Colour temperature governs how a space feels the moment someone steps inside. A hallway is the first interior impression and the last thing a visitor sees on departure — the temperature choice carries more weight here than in a utility room or home office.

2700K produces a warm, incandescent-adjacent glow that flatters skin tones and makes a narrow hallway feel intentional rather than clinical. 3000K is slightly crisper and suits contemporary schemes with white walls and hard flooring. Anything above 3500K reads as commercial and is the wrong choice for a domestic entrance.

For a hallway that also serves as a staircase approach, prioritise the stair edge. The fitting must throw enough light downward to make each tread visible. A wall light with a downward-facing element — an open base, a downward lobe, or a semi-opaque lower shade — delivers this without requiring a separate ceiling fitting. Avoid fully enclosed globes as the sole light source on a staircase; they diffuse light evenly in all directions but leave the floor plane under-lit.

Lamp type also affects perceived temperature. GU10 LEDs rated at 2700K with a CRI of 90 or above render colours accurately and make the hallway feel finished rather than functional. Avoid cheap LEDs with CRI below 80 — they flatten the appearance of wood floors and painted walls.

How many wall lights does a hallway need?

One wall light per 1.5–2 metres of hallway length is the standard spacing; stagger fittings on opposite walls to avoid a corridor effect.

A single wall light at the end of a long hallway creates a dark tunnel with a bright spot at the terminus — the opposite of what the space needs. Distribute fittings along the run so the floor is evenly lit throughout.

For a straight hallway up to 3 metres long, one fitting centred on the longest wall is sufficient. For 3–6 metres, use two fittings: either both on the same wall at 1.5-metre intervals, or one on each opposing wall staggered by 75cm so their light cones overlap at the centre. For hallways over 6 metres — common in Victorian terraces and new-build open-plan ground floors — use three fittings and consider supplementing with a ceiling downlight at the entrance end.

Staggering fittings on opposite walls is the professional approach for any hallway over 4 metres. It eliminates the institutional corridor effect and creates a rhythm that draws the eye through the space. The stagger distance should be half the interval between fittings on a single wall — so if you'd space them 2 metres apart on one wall, offset the opposite fitting by 1 metre.

Switching matters too. A hallway that runs between two doors — front door to kitchen, for example — must have two-way switching at both ends. Under Approved Document P, any new fixed lighting circuit in a dwelling requires notification to Building Control unless the work is carried out by a registered competent person.

What finish and style suits a hallway wall light?

Matt black and brushed brass are the most durable hallway finishes; they hide fingerprints and handle the higher traffic contact that hallways receive.

Hallways take more physical contact than any other room. Door frames, coat hooks, and bags brushing past fittings mean the finish must be robust. Chrome and polished nickel show fingerprints and scuffs within weeks in a busy household. Matt black, brushed brass, and satin nickel are the practical choices — they age cleanly and require only a dry cloth to maintain.

Style should follow the architecture. A Victorian or Edwardian hallway with picture rails and coving suits a lantern-form fitting or a fitting with visible filament-style LEDs. A contemporary new-build with flush ceilings and minimal architrave suits a geometric backplate — a square or rectangular form with a single G9 lamp — rather than a traditional shade.

Smoked glass and frosted diffusers reduce glare in a narrow space where the fitting is often at eye level. Clear glass looks striking in a double-height entrance hall but creates hotspots in a low-ceilinged corridor.

For energy compliance, note that Approved Document L requires new fixed lighting in dwellings to use efficacious light sources — in practice, this means LED lamps or fittings with integrated LEDs. A G9 LED capsule at 3–5W replacing a 40W halogen capsule meets this requirement comfortably and reduces heat output, which matters in a small enclosed hallway.
