Do wall lights work as a genuine replacement for bedside lamps?

Wall lights replace bedside lamps fully when they provide directional reading light, sit at the right height, and have individual switching.

Wall-mounted bedside lighting is standard practice in hotel specification and increasingly common in residential builds. The functional case is straightforward: a fixed wall light frees up the bedside table entirely, eliminates trailing cables, and — when wired correctly — gives each occupant independent control without disturbing the other.

The critical variables are position, directionality, and switching. A fixed uplighter or a purely decorative sconce will not replace a bedside lamp because it cannot direct light onto a book or a phone screen. Choose a fitting with an adjustable head, a swing arm, or a shade that focuses output downward and toward the bed.

Many specifiers working in bedrooms choose wall lights for precisely this reason: the fitting becomes part of the architecture rather than a loose accessory that moves every time the room is rearranged. That permanence is the main trade-off — once wired in, repositioning requires a Part P-compliant electrician.

For a standard UK double bed, fit one light per side. Symmetry is not compulsory, but independent switching per side is. A single two-gang switch at the door or individual switches at each fitting both satisfy this requirement.

What height should wall lights be above a bed?

Mount bedside wall lights so the centre of the fitting sits 1.4–1.5 metres from the floor, placing the light source at seated eye level.

The 1.4–1.5 metre centre-height rule is derived from the seated reading position. A person sitting up in bed with pillows behind them has their eyes at roughly 1.2–1.3 metres from the floor; the light source should be slightly above that to cast downward without shining directly into the eyes.

Adjust for mattress height. A low platform bed brings the occupant's eye level down; a high divan raises it. Measure from the finished floor to the top of the mattress, add 600–700mm for the seated torso, and position the fitting 100–150mm above that point.

For swing-arm or adjustable-head fittings, the centre-height can sit at the lower end of the range (1.4 metres) because the arm or head compensates for the fixed position. For fixed-shade fittings, err toward 1.5 metres to ensure the shade itself does not block the light cone at reading angle.

Backplate depth matters too. A fitting that projects 150mm or more from the wall will feel intrusive above a narrow bedside zone. Choose a low-profile backplate — under 100mm projection — unless the room has the width to accommodate a swing arm comfortably.

Mark both positions on the wall before any first-fix wiring. Confirm the height with the actual mattress and bed frame in place, not from architectural drawings alone.

What bulb specification and colour temperature should you use?

Use a 4–6W LED at 2700–3000K for bedside wall lights — warm enough for relaxation, bright enough for reading without straining the eyes.

Bedroom lighting sits in the lowest-demand zone of the home for raw lumen output. A 4W LED producing 350–400 lumens per side is sufficient for reading; 6W (500–550 lumens) suits anyone who reads fine print or works in bed regularly.

Colour temperature is non-negotiable for sleep hygiene. Anything above 3000K introduces blue-spectrum light that suppresses melatonin. Specify 2700K as the default; 3000K is acceptable if the fitting's shade or diffuser warms the output slightly. Avoid "cool white" (4000K+) entirely in a bedroom context.

CRI (Colour Rendering Index) is often overlooked in bedrooms. A CRI of 90+ renders skin tones and fabric colours accurately — relevant if the space doubles as a dressing area. Most quality LED lamps at 2700K already achieve CRI 90; confirm it on the lamp datasheet rather than assuming.

Dimming compatibility is worth specifying at the outset. Pair a dimmable LED lamp with a trailing-edge dimmer switch. Leading-edge (resistive) dimmers cause flicker and buzzing with most LED drivers. Check the dimmer's minimum load rating against the combined wattage of both fittings on the same circuit.

For fittings with integrated LEDs — where the light source is not replaceable — confirm the rated lifespan (25,000 hours minimum) and the manufacturer's warranty before specifying.

How should bedside wall lights be wired and switched?

Bedside wall lights must be on a dedicated lighting circuit, switched independently per side, and installed by a Part P-registered electrician.

Wiring wall lights into an existing lighting circuit is straightforward for a qualified electrician. The key specification decisions are switching arrangement and cable routing.

Independent switching per side means each occupant controls their own light. This is achieved either by running a separate switch spur to each fitting or by using smart switches with individual channel control. Two-way switching — where each light can be controlled from both the door and the bedside — is the most practical arrangement for a main bedroom.

Cable routing in a bedroom is typically concealed in the wall (first-fix, before plastering) or run in surface conduit if retrofitting. Surface conduit is functional but aesthetically compromised; plan wall lights at first-fix stage wherever possible.

All electrical work in a bedroom must comply with BS 7671 (the IET Wiring Regulations). Bedrooms are not a notifiable location under Part P of the Building Regulations in England — unlike kitchens and bathrooms — but the work must still be carried out to the required standard. Are there any fittings to avoid above a bed?

The zone directly above a bed is low-traffic but physically proximate to the occupant. Fitting selection should account for that proximity.

Bare-bulb fittings produce glare at eye level when lying down. Even a filament lamp with decorative appeal becomes uncomfortable in this position. Choose a fitting with a shade, diffuser, or directional housing that shields the source from direct view when the occupant is reclined.

Purely upward-facing sconces — the classic half-drum or cone uplighter — wash the ceiling but provide no useful task light. They are appropriate for ambient mood lighting in a bedroom, not as a replacement for a bedside lamp.

Glass shades directly above a sleeping position carry a minor but real risk if the fitting is not securely fixed. Specify fittings with a metal or fabric shade, or ensure glass-shaded fittings are rated for the backplate fixing method used on your wall type (plasterboard, masonry, or timber stud).

For bedrooms with low ceilings or tight wall clearance, avoid fittings with swing arms that project more than 300mm — they create an obstruction hazard at head height.
