BS 7671, the UK Wiring Regulations, classifies outdoor locations by exposure rather than simply inside or outside. A canopy with solid sides or a fully enclosed porch, carport or entrance roof keeps the fitting dry and counts as a sheltered environment, so an IP44-rated indoor-style luminaire is acceptable. Once the canopy is open on two or more sides, or rain can drive in at an angle, the position is treated as exposed and IP65 becomes the practical minimum. Condensation matters too: an unventilated canopy can still trap moisture overnight, so choose a fitting with a proper gasket rather than a bare decorative flush light.
