Can a chandelier be used outdoors in a covered space?

A chandelier can be used in a covered outdoor space if it carries a minimum IP44 rating and is installed on a weatherproof backplate.

What IP rating does a chandelier need for a covered outdoor space?

A chandelier in a covered outdoor space requires at minimum IP44, which guards against water splashing from any direction and airborne debris.

IP44 is the threshold because covered spaces — pergolas, verandas, porches, and open-sided garden rooms — expose fittings to wind-driven rain and condensation even when there is a roof overhead. The first digit (4) means protection against solid particles larger than 1mm; the second digit (4) means protection against water splashing from any direction. A standard interior chandelier carries no IP rating or IP20 at best, which is inadequate the moment it leaves a fully enclosed, dry room.

For spaces that are partially open on two or more sides, or where the roof is slatted rather than solid, step up to IP65. At IP65 the fitting is fully dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets — conditions that match a pergola with gaps or a coastal location where salt spray is a factor.

When specifying chandeliers for outdoor use, check the IP rating on the fitting itself and separately on the ceiling rose or canopy, the cable entry point, and any inline switch. A chain-hung chandelier with an IP44 body fitted to an unrated backplate is not IP44 in practice — the weakest point defines the installation's actual protection level.

BS 7671 (the IET Wiring Regulations) classifies covered outdoor locations as external zones requiring appropriate IP-rated equipment. A qualified electrician must confirm the zone classification before installation.

Which materials survive outdoor conditions without corroding?

Powder-coated steel, marine-grade stainless steel, and solid brass are the three materials that resist outdoor corrosion reliably in UK conditions.

Most indoor chandeliers use plated steel, chrome over zinc alloy, or bare aluminium — finishes that oxidise or blister within one season outdoors. The material underneath the finish matters as much as the finish itself.

Powder-coated steel holds up well in sheltered outdoor positions. The coating must be intact with no chips at installation; any breach allows rust to track under the surface. Black powder coat, as used on the Wera 7 Light Candle Chandelier, is a practical choice because the dark pigment contains UV stabilisers that slow fade.

Brass — solid, not plated — is the most durable decorative metal for outdoor use. It oxidises to a patina rather than corroding structurally, and the patina itself acts as a barrier. Crystal and glass drops present a separate issue: thermal cycling (cold nights, warm days) stresses the metal pins that hold them. Check that drops are secured with stainless or brass pins, not plated steel wire, which corrodes and eventually drops the crystal.

Avoid chrome-plated fittings outdoors entirely. Chrome over steel pits within months in a damp UK climate, and chrome over zinc alloy is worse. Antique brass plating over steel is equally unsuitable — the plating is too thin to protect the substrate.

How should a chandelier be wired in a covered outdoor space?

Outdoor chandelier wiring must use armoured or outdoor-rated cable, a weatherproof backplate, and an RCD-protected circuit from the consumer unit.

The supply cable running to an outdoor chandelier must be rated for external use. SWA (steel wire armoured) cable is the standard for buried or exposed outdoor runs. Where the cable is surface-mounted or run through conduit on a covered ceiling, use HO7RN-F rubber-sheathed flexible cable, which tolerates temperature extremes and UV exposure that PVC-sheathed cable cannot.

The chandelier must terminate into a weatherproof backplate rated to at least the same IP level as the fitting. The backplate encloses the cable connection and prevents moisture tracking down the cable into the terminal block. Chain-hung chandeliers require a load-rated hook or canopy bracket capable of supporting the fitting's weight — outdoor conditions add wind load to the static weight.

All outdoor lighting circuits must be protected by a 30mA RCD at the consumer unit. This is a requirement under BS 7671, not a recommendation. If the existing outdoor circuit does not have RCD protection, the electrician must add it before connecting the chandelier.

LED lamps are the correct choice for outdoor chandeliers. Halogen runs hot and the thermal cycling accelerates seal degradation on IP-rated fittings. Choose LED candle lamps rated for enclosed fittings (some LED lamps overheat in sealed housings). Does a covered outdoor chandelier need planning permission or building regulations approval?

Installing a chandelier in an existing covered outdoor structure is notifiable electrical work under Part P and requires a Building Regulations certificate.

Planning permission is not required for the light fitting itself. However, if the covered structure — pergola, veranda, or garden room — is a new build or extension, that structure may require planning permission and building regulations approval independently of the lighting.

The electrical installation is the regulated element. Under Part P of the Building Regulations (England and Wales), adding a new circuit or extending an existing circuit outdoors is notifiable work. This means the installation must be carried out by a registered competent person (Part P registered electrician) or notified to the local authority building control before work begins. On completion, the homeowner receives a Building Regulations compliance certificate — keep this for conveyancing.

Scotland operates under Section 4J of the Technical Handbooks; Northern Ireland under Technical Booklet P. The outcome is the same: outdoor electrical work requires certification.

For the light fitting itself, no separate approval is needed provided it carries the correct IP rating and CE or UKCA marking. UKCA marking has been required for products placed on the UK market since January 2023 — verify this on the product specification sheet before purchasing.
