Weatherproof is not a certification — the ingress protection (IP) rating is. The first digit covers solid objects and dust, the second covers moisture, and only the second digit tells you whether the fitting survives British weather. IP44 means the light is protected against splashing water from any direction, which suits a porch or a recessed doorway. IP65 withstands water jets and is the sensible choice for an open canopy, a carport or any ceiling where rain drives upward and sideways. Many fittings marketed as outdoor ceiling lights carry IP44 because they are designed for sheltered mounting under soffits and covered entrances, so the rating tells you the intended position, not just the build quality. Before specifying anything, read the datasheet rather than the marketing copy, and match the rating to where rain can actually reach the fitting. A light under a deep porch roof faces very different conditions from one on an open pergola, and the two should not share a specification.
Which IP rating does each outdoor location need?
Zone classification under BS 7671 decides the rating: zone 1 needs IPX4 minimum, zone 2 IPX4 or IPX5, and outside zones IPX3 is often accepted.
BS 7671, the UK wiring regulations, divides bathrooms and similar wet locations into zones, and the same logic applies to exterior ceilings. Zone 1 is the area directly above a bath or shower — outdoors, treat this as any ceiling where water can drip or spray onto the fitting, which demands IPX4 at minimum. Zone 2 extends 0.6 metres beyond zone 1 and requires IPX4, with IPX5 preferred where hosepipes or pressure washers are used. Outside defined zones, IPX3 is often accepted, but in practice most specifiers fit nothing below IP44 on an external ceiling because wind-driven rain does not respect zone boundaries. Coastal and exposed sites justify IP65 across the board. Look for the two-digit code: IP44, IP54, IP65 or IP66 are the common ratings on exterior ceiling fittings. A rating with an X in place of a digit, such as IPX4, means that dimension was not tested, which is common and acceptable for moisture-only claims. Verify that the rating applies to the complete fitting, not just the diffuser, and check whether the manufacturer specifies a minimum mounting height or orientation, because some downlights are only rated when mounted one way up. Does installation quality affect weatherproofing?

An IP65 fitting installed badly performs worse than an IP44 fitting installed well. The rating is tested on the product as manufactured, and every field modification erodes it. The common failure points are predictable: cable entries left unsealed, gaskets pinched or omitted on reassembly, and lamp covers not clicked fully home after a bulb change. Use the manufacturer's specified cable gland size, apply a bead of external-grade silicone around the backplate where it meets masonry or timber, and orient drain holes downward so condensation can escape rather than pool inside the diffuser. Flexible cords should enter through glands, not raw holes, and connections belong in a rated junction box, not taped behind the fitting. After installation, run a hose test at low pressure from below and check for ingress at the gasket line the following morning. Condensation inside the diffuser after the first cold night usually means a missing drain hole or a seal that has not been compressed evenly — both are fixable in minutes if caught early.
